Yes, you can apply for AI training work without a degree: 295 generalist listings are open as of October 24, 2026, and 58 of them say no degree or specialist experience is needed. The work is real, it is paid hourly on most listings, and the screening is a conversation and a task rather than a credential check.
What generalist AI training work actually is
Model makers need people to judge output. A generalist role is one where the judging does not require a professional licence or a PhD in the subject. You read what a model produced, compare it against instructions or a reference answer, and record whether it holds up.
The titles tell you most of what you need. We see Evaluation Specialist, Quality Analyst, Special Projects Associate, Customer Support Associate and AI Trainer across the generalist listings. Some ask you to write prompts and rate the replies. Some ask you to check reasoning step by step. Some are closer to operations work: reviewing submissions, tagging, keeping a queue moving.
None of that requires a degree. It requires reading carefully, following a rubric, and writing a short justification that another reviewer can act on. The listings that do ask for depth name the field in the title, and those are a different job with a different rate.
How many roles are open and what they pay
There are 295 open generalist listings on the site as of October 24, 2026. Of those, 249 state an hourly rate. The median top rate is $70/hr. The 10th percentile top rate is $20/hr and the 90th percentile top rate is $113/hr, with the highest generalist listing at $300/hr. The other 46 listings do not state pay at all, and the rate is given during onboarding.
Treat every figure as a top rate unless the listing says otherwise. Most of them quote the ceiling of a band, so read "up to" into the number before you plan around it.

micro1
Generalist Evaluation Specialist listings are the most open entry point we have seen on any platform. 17 of its 52 generalist listings are beginner-friendly. The recruiter interview is automated, so do it somewhere quiet with a working camera and microphone. Applications go through micro1.
SME Careers
It names the eligible countries on almost every role, which makes it the easiest platform to check before you apply. Many roles are open across South and Southeast Asia as well as the US and Europe. Pay is listed as a top rate, so read it as "up to". Language team lead roles suit native speakers with review experience. See SME Careers.
Handshake AI
This is the careers network used by universities, and its AI program pays students, graduates, master's and PhD holders. Many roles name a degree level or a country in the title. Strong fit if you are a current student or a recent graduate.
AI training jobs no experience: what gets you accepted
Screening is not a trick, and the 58 beginner-friendly listings do not hide a credential bar. A few habits make the difference.
Apply to the listing that matches your background most closely, not to everything on the board. A short, specific resume beats a long generic one, and reviewers on these platforms read a lot of both.
Do the interview properly. For micro1, that means a quiet room, a working camera and microphone, and answers about what you have actually done. For Mercor, expect a short AI-led video interview about your background, and on some projects a domain assessment before you are matched.
Expect a task that looks like the work. AfterQuery and Terac both screen with something close to the real job. Do it yourself and write justifications that a reviewer can follow.
Read the eligibility line before you start. Only 2 generalist listings say worldwide. 100 name specific countries and 193 say only "Remote", which does not confirm your country is included.
Who can apply from where
The countries named most often across the 295 generalist listings are the United States (42), India (34), Bangladesh (33), Pakistan (32), Brazil (16), Mexico (14), Argentina (13), Ecuador (11), Peru (10), Chile (10) and Uruguay (10). Spain appears 9 times.
Location rules vary by platform and by project. SME Careers listed a country on all 48 of its generalist roles, while Handshake AI named one on a single listing. The rest either say worldwide or leave the location at "Remote". A listing that says remote is open to a country only when it names that country or says worldwide.
If you are outside the country a listing names, do not apply anyway and do not misstate where you live. Work authorization, tax and visa treatment depend on where you live, so check locally before you accept anything.
