Job counts and pay in this guide come from the live listings on this site as of October 22, 2026. They change daily; the linked pages always show today’s numbers.

You have seen a listing promising $80/hr to grade AI answers, or a stranger on WhatsApp offering you paid AI work. You want to know whether are ai training jobs legit before you give up an evening to a screening test. This guide shows what real paid AI training work looks like, the scam signs to walk away from, and the checks we run before a platform goes on this site.

TL;DR

  • Real AI training work is contract work for AI labs and data companies. You apply, you screen, you get paid per hour, per task, or per audio. No part of it costs you money.
  • As of October 22, 2026, our listings show 1,367 open roles. 1,226 of them state an hourly rate, with a median top rate of $79/hr.
  • Any request for an application fee, a training fee, a deposit, or a "starter kit" purchase is a scam, whatever platform name appears on the message.
  • Recruiter contact that starts on WhatsApp or Telegram, or arrives from an email domain that does not match the platform's official site, is a red flag.
  • We joined all 10 platforms we list and went through their screening ourselves. That vetting decides what appears here, not the size of the advertised rate.

AI training jobs are legit when a real platform hires you as a contractor to write, label, rank, or judge data for an AI lab, and nobody asks you for money at any stage. That is the short answer. The rest of this guide is how to confirm it for a specific listing.

The scam signs to walk away from

Any fee to apply, train, or start work

Real platforms make money when you work. They do not charge you to be considered. If a message asks for an application fee, a refundable deposit, a background check payment, or a payment to activate your account, stop there. There is no version of this work where paying first is normal.

Recruiter messages that start on WhatsApp or Telegram

A first contact from a personal number on a chat app is not how these platforms recruit. Some legitimate platforms do use messaging later in a project, after you are already inside their system. A cold message asking you to move to WhatsApp before you have applied anywhere is the pattern to ignore.

Email from a domain that is not the platform's

Check the part after the @ against the platform's official site. A recruiter writing from a Gmail address, or from a domain that looks close to the real one with an extra letter or a different ending, is not that platform. Open the platform's own site in a browser and apply there instead of replying.

Starter kits and equipment you must buy

Headphones, a microphone, a laptop: you use your own. Nobody ships you a paid starter kit, and nobody requires you to buy software before your first task. A listing that bundles training material into a purchase is selling the material.

Pay that sounds like a salary with no screening

A rate that looks like a full-time salary, offered with no assessment and no questions about your background, is bait. Every platform we vetted screens people before paying them. Screening is the filter that makes the rate possible.

How to check whether AI training jobs are legit

Five checks, in order. They take a few minutes.

  1. Match the domain. Find the platform's official site, then compare it to the link in the message or listing. If they differ, close the message.
  2. Read the pay line closely. Most listings state only a top rate. Treat it as "up to", not as a guarantee. A per-audio or per-task rate is not an hourly rate, and anyone who converts one into the other for you is guessing.
  3. Ask what the screening is. Legit platforms describe an assessment, an interview, or a review of your background. "No experience needed, start today" combined with expert pay is a contradiction.
  4. Check the country. "Remote" alone does not mean worldwide. On our listings right now, 421 roles name specific countries, 26 say worldwide, and 920 say only "Remote" with no location stated. If a listing does not name your country, ask before you spend time applying.
  5. Never pay. This one holds even when everything above looks right.

How the real platforms get you in

We joined each platform below, applied, and went through screening. That is the standard we use, and it is why we can describe the entry step for each one. Listings on this site come from each platform's public feed, refreshed daily. We do not read or approve individual listings.

The median column shows the top hourly rate across our listings for that platform. The mix of roles differs on every platform, so read it as a picture of what is posted there, not as one market paying different rates.

Platform Open listings Median top hourly rate How you get in
SME Careers 246 $50/hr Apply to a role, fill in your profile, pass a skills assessment in your subject or language
micro1 230 $95/hr Apply on the listing, complete the AI recruiter interview
Mercor 227 $84/hr Upload your resume, apply to one specific listing, complete a short AI-led video interview
AfterQuery 224 $80/hr Apply to the listing for your field, complete a screening task that looks like the real work
Handshake AI 173 $80/hr Sign up through Handshake, pick an opportunity, complete an assessment
Turing 107 $15/hr Create a profile, apply, complete coding or skill assessments
Ethos 102 $80/hr Open the opportunity and apply with your professional background
Babel Audio 37 Per audio, not shown hourly Sign up, choose your language, complete a short audio or transcription test
Mindrift 19 $70/hr Sign up, complete your profile, pass the qualification tests
Outlier 2 No hourly rates Sign up through the project link, complete the onboarding assessments

Two rows deserve a plain note. Babel Audio pays per audio or per finished recording, so we never display it as an hourly figure. Turing often does not state pay up front, and you learn the rate during onboarding.

Full details for each one sit on our platforms compared side by side page, and the method behind the table is on how we vet platforms.

What the pay numbers actually tell you

Across all 1,367 open listings as of October 22, 2026, the median top hourly rate is $79/hr. The 10th percentile is $25/hr and the 90th percentile is $130/hr. The highest listed rate is $500/hr. Those are top rates, so read every one as "up to".

The spread makes sense once you look at who the roles are for. Expert work in medicine, law, and research pays more than generalist review, and those are different markets with different buyers. A physician reviewing clinical output and a student grading short answers are not competing for the same rate.

Some examples from the listings, each in its own field:

If you are starting without a specialist background, 293 of the open roles are beginner-friendly, meaning no degree or specialist experience is required. Those sit in Generalist AI training jobs more often than anywhere else. If you have a technical or research background, look at Science and engineering AI training jobs. Business-side expertise, including finance, venture, and analysis, is the focus of Finance and business AI training jobs.

Two practical notes. 104 listings do not state pay at all, and the rate comes up during onboarding. 37 are paid per audio, which we never convert to an hourly figure. Tax and visa questions depend on where you live, so check locally before you accept a contract.

Our apply links earn the site a referral reward when someone is hired. It does not affect which roles we list or how we describe them, and how referral links work here explains it in full.

Questions people ask

Do real AI training jobs ever charge a fee?
No. A real platform hires you as a contractor to write, label, rank, or judge data for an AI lab, and it does not ask for an application fee, training fee, deposit, or starter kit purchase. Any request for money before work is a scam, regardless of the platform name on the message.
How can I check if an AI training job is legitimate?
Match the link or email domain to the platform's official site, ask what the screening involves, and confirm the listing names your country. Legit platforms describe an assessment, interview, or background review, and they never require payment.
What pay should I expect from AI training work?
Pay varies by field and role. As of October 22, 2026, we list 1,367 open roles, and 1,226 of them state an hourly rate, with a median top rate of $79/hr, so treat listed rates as up to that amount.
Do AI training jobs hire people without experience?
Some do. As of October 22, 2026, 293 of our open roles are beginner-friendly, meaning they require no degree or specialist experience, and they sit in generalist AI training jobs more often than anywhere else.
