Job counts and pay in this guide come from the live listings on this site as of October 28, 2026. They change daily; the linked pages always show today’s numbers.

You want to get paid to train AI, and you want a route that fits your background. You may be a student, a recent graduate, or a specialist in law, finance, medicine, or software. We list open roles and we vetted the platforms ourselves, so start with fit and pay.

TL;DR

  • You get paid to train AI by contracting with a platform to write, grade, or evaluate model output in a field you know.
  • As of October 28, 2026, we list 1,730 open listings. 1,464 state an hourly rate. The median top rate is $75/hr, with a 10th percentile of $25/hr and a 90th percentile of $144/hr.
  • 373 listings are beginner-friendly. 735 name specific countries, 36 say worldwide, and 959 only say Remote with no country.
  • Beginner route: micro1 generalist evaluation, Handshake AI for students and recent grads, SME Careers for language and subject roles.
  • Expert route: Mercor for narrow domain work, micro1 specialist roles, AfterQuery for field-specific screening tasks.

To get paid to train AI, you apply to a platform that contracts people to improve model output, pass its screening, and complete paid tasks in your subject or language.

What the work is

Most of this work is not building a model. You write examples, review model answers, grade outputs against instructions, or produce domain data. Some roles are generalist evaluation. Others need medicine, law, finance, engineering, languages, or audio.

Pay can be hourly, per task, or per audio. As of October 28, 2026, 33 of our listings are paid per audio. We do not turn per-audio pay into an hourly figure. Another 233 listings do not state pay at all, and the rate is given during onboarding.

Who gets hired, and who should skip it

As of October 28, 2026, 373 of the 1,730 listings are beginner-friendly. The rest ask for a degree, specialist experience, or both. The field counts show where the open work sits right now.

Field Open listings as of October 28, 2026
Science & engineering 316
Generalist 307
Finance & business 232
Software & data 221
Languages 166
Voice & audio 150
Medicine & health 132
Law & compliance 87

Eligibility is the part many people skip. A listing is open to your country only if it names your country or says worldwide. Remote alone does not mean worldwide. As of October 28, 2026, 735 listings name specific countries, 36 say worldwide, and 959 only say Remote with no country. The countries named most are the United States at 290, India at 161, and Germany at 117.

Skip expert listings if you cannot show a record in the field. Skip any listing that does not name your country or say worldwide. Skip this work if you need guaranteed hours or a set monthly income. Tax, legal and visa questions depend on where you live, so check locally.

What the pay looks like right now

As of October 28, 2026, 1,464 listings state an hourly rate. The median top rate is $75/hr. The 10th percentile is $25/hr, the 90th percentile is $144/hr, and the highest is $500/hr. Most listings state only a top rate, so read a single number as up to that rate. A range like $60 to $120/hr is listed pay, not a promise.

Platform Open listings right now Median top hourly rate
micro1 252 $90/hr
SME Careers 247 $50/hr
AfterQuery 226 $80/hr
Mercor 221 $90/hr
Anyone AI 204 $40/hr
Handshake AI 180 $80/hr

Babel Audio is separate. Most of its work is paid per audio, not per hour, so we never show it as an hourly rate. Per-task pay works the same way. We do not convert it to an hourly figure.

How to get paid to train AI: beginner and expert routes

The route depends on what you can prove. We compared platforms side by side, and the first three choices differ for a beginner and an expert.

Beginner: start with generalist or student-friendly work

  1. micro1. Generalist Evaluation Specialist listings are the most open entry point. You apply on the listing page, then complete an AI recruiter interview about your experience. Read our page on micro1 jobs and screening, then use the guide to the micro1 AI recruiter interview. Do the interview somewhere quiet, with a working camera and mic. Official site: jobs.micro1.ai.
  2. Handshake AI. Strong fit if you are a current student or recent grad in a technical field. Many roles name a degree level or a country in the title. Start with Handshake AI jobs and screening, and read Is Handshake AI Legit? for the program structure. Official site: joinhandshake.com.
  3. SME Careers. It lists the eligible countries on almost every role, which is rare and useful. Many roles are open across South and Southeast Asia as well as the US and Europe. Pay is listed as a top rate, so treat it as up to. Browse generalist AI training jobs if you want the broadest entry point.

If you want more entry-level options, our list of DataAnnotation alternatives that are hiring now is a useful next stop.

Expert: apply to narrow roles that match your record

  1. Mercor. Most roles are hourly contracts for people with real domain depth: physicians, lawyers, PhDs, engineers, finance people. Apply to the listing that matches your background most closely. Read Mercor jobs and screening, the Mercor AI interview guide, and Is Mercor Legit? before you apply. An Agent Engineer role at Mercor lists $100 to $500/hr, location not stated. Official site: work.mercor.com.
  2. micro1 specialist roles. micro1 posts specialist roles in medicine, finance, engineering and research. A micro1 Investment Funds & Asset Management Attorney listing lists $140 to $400/hr, location not stated. These roles test the skill, so prepare to discuss your own work.
  3. AfterQuery. AfterQuery builds training and evaluation datasets with experts who write tasks and judge model answers in their own field. Expect a screening task that looks like the real work. Browse finance and business AI training jobs or science and engineering AI training jobs, depending on your field. Official site: experts.afterquery.com.

How screening works

We joined and went through screening on the platforms we list. Our page on how we vet platforms explains that process. Listings come from each platform's public feed daily. We do not check individual listings.

Before you apply

Pick one listing that matches your background. Check the country named on the listing, not just the word Remote. For technical roles, expect a skills assessment. For language roles, expect a language test. Prepare examples from your own work.

During screening

Expect an AI-led interview, a skills assessment, or a short screening task. micro1 uses an AI recruiter interview. Mercor often asks for a short AI-led video interview about your background, and some projects add a domain assessment. Handshake AI asks about your degree and field, then runs an assessment for the project. We do not describe specific questions. Prepare by reviewing your own record and practicing clear answers about what you have done.

After you pass

Passing screening puts you in the pool for a project. It does not guarantee paid tasks. Projects start and end. Apply to the next listing that fits when one opens.
