Job counts and pay in this guide come from the live listings on this site as of October 28, 2026. They change daily; the linked pages always show today’s numbers.
You have two tabs open and you want to know which platform to sign up for first. Mercor and micro1 both pay expert rates for AI training work, and both screen you with an AI interview before any project starts. The mercor vs micro1 choice comes down to your field, how specialized you are, and which countries the listings actually name. We joined and applied to both, and we list every open AI training role we find on the platforms we have vetted ourselves.
TL;DR
- Both platforms show the same median top hourly rate, $90/hr, as of October 28, 2026. Mercor has 221 open listings, micro1 has 252.
- micro1 is the easier first application, with 61 beginner-friendly listings against Mercor's 36.
- Mercor hires most in science and engineering (54 of its 221 listings). micro1 hires most in generalist work (64) and law and compliance (43).
- micro1 names 36 listings as worldwide. Mercor names none.
- Pick micro1 if you are early career or outside the United States. Pick Mercor if your resume shows narrow specialist depth.
Pick micro1 first if you are starting out or need a listing that names your country, and pick Mercor first if you hold deep expertise in one specific field that a lab would pay to hear explained.
Mercor vs micro1: the comparison table
Everything below comes from the listings feed we track daily for both platforms, counted on October 28, 2026. It reflects what each platform has posted, not what any individual applicant will get. For the method behind it, see how we vet platforms.

|---|---|---|
| Open listings | 221 | 252 |
| Listings stating an hourly rate | 216 | 247 |
| Median top hourly rate | $90/hr | $90/hr |
| 10th to 90th percentile top rate | $52/hr to $160/hr | $30/hr to $300/hr |
| Highest listed rate | $500/hr | $400/hr |
| Listings with no pay stated | 5 | 5 |
| Beginner-friendly listings | 36 | 61 |
| Fields hired most | Science and engineering (54), generalist (39), medicine and health (29) | Generalist (64), law and compliance (43), software and data (29) |

| Listings that only say "Remote" | 179 | 160 |
| Country named most | United States (10) | United States (54) |
| How screening works | Resume upload, then apply to a specific listing. A short AI-led video interview comes next, and some projects add a domain assessment | Apply on the listing page, then an AI recruiter interview. For technical roles, the interview tests the skill |
Every pay figure in that table is a top rate. Most listings state a ceiling and say "up to", and a few give the rate during onboarding instead.
Where the two platforms actually differ
Pay shape
The medians match at $90/hr, but the spread does not. micro1's 90th percentile top rate sits at $300/hr against Mercor's $160/hr, so its top end reaches higher. Mercor's 10th percentile is $52/hr against micro1's $30/hr, so its floor sits higher. If you are choosing on pay alone, look at your own field's listings rather than the platform average. Rates differ by discipline, and the two platforms hire in different proportions.
Countries
This is the clearest split. Both platforms leave most listings marked only "Remote", 179 on Mercor and 160 on micro1. Remote alone does not mean worldwide. A listing is open to your country only if it names it or says worldwide. micro1 names 36 listings as worldwide and has 56 that name specific countries. Mercor has 42 country-specific listings and none marked worldwide. Its most named country is the United States with 10 listings, so if you are outside the US and not covered by a named country, micro1 will usually give you more to apply to.
Beginner roles
micro1 carries 61 listings that need no degree or specialist experience. Mercor carries 36, and its roles lean toward people with real domain depth. Neither number guarantees you a match, but the ratio tells you which platform was built with less experienced applicants in mind.
Mercor: narrow roles, deep specialists
Mercor matches professionals with AI labs that need expert feedback on model output, and most of its work is hourly contracts for people with genuine domain depth. That shows in the field split. Science and engineering leads with 54 of 221 listings, ahead of generalist at 39, medicine and health at 29, finance and business at 27, voice and audio at 26, software and data at 21, law and compliance at 10, and design and creative at 5.
A lot of Mercor's listings are narrow. One example is Agent Engineer at $100 to $500/hr. A narrow listing makes it easy to tell whether you fit, and it also means a generic application will not carry you. If your background is in science and engineering AI training work, Mercor currently has more openings in that area than micro1 has in the whole category. The same is true of medicine and health roles.
How Mercor screens you
You upload a resume and apply to a specific listing. Most listings then ask for a short AI-led video interview about your background, and some projects add a domain assessment before you are matched. Apply to the one listing that matches your background most closely, not to everything on the board. Projects start and end, and being accepted once makes the next match faster.

micro1: wider range, more ways in
micro1 recruits contractors for AI data work through an AI recruiter interview, and its board is broader. Generalist work leads with 64 of 252 listings, then law and compliance at 43, software and data at 29, finance and business at 28, medicine and health at 28, science and engineering at 23, voice and audio at 18, and design and creative at 8.
The range shows in the pay too. micro1 carries attorney roles at the top of its board, such as Investment Funds and Asset Management Attorney at up to $400/hr and Venture Capital and Corporate Attorney at up to $400/hr. At the other end it posts project work with named countries, like Management Consulting Expert at $60 to $120/hr, open to the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Brazil.
For a first application with no specialist background, generalist "Evaluation Specialist" listings are the most open entry point. We keep a running list of generalist AI training jobs across the platforms we cover.
How micro1 screens you
You apply on the listing page and complete the AI recruiter interview. It asks about your experience, and for technical roles it tests the skill itself. If you pass, you are matched to a project when one opens. Do the interview somewhere quiet, with a working camera and microphone, and use your own answers.
Our walkthrough of the micro1 AI recruiter interview, step by step covers how the conversation runs. We also wrote about what the micro1 interview and pay are really like after going through it. The micro1 jobs and screening page collects the platform facts.
Which one should you apply to?
Pick Mercor if you are a specialist with a resume that shows depth in one field: a scientist, an engineer, a clinician, a finance professional, a lawyer. Its listings are specific enough that you can judge your fit in a minute, and 216 of its 221 listings state an hourly rate, so you know the range before you apply.
Pick micro1 if you are early in your career, switching fields, or based somewhere that Mercor does not name. Its 61 beginner-friendly listings and 36 worldwide listings give you more places to start, and its generalist roles are built for people without a specialist credential.
Apply to both if you fit one platform's specialist profile and the other's country list. Both are free to apply to, both screen with an AI interview, and neither promises you work after you pass. The applications take an afternoon. If you want a third option before you commit, our list of DataAnnotation alternatives that are hiring covers other routes.
