Job counts and pay in this guide come from the live listings on this site as of October 23, 2026. They change daily; the linked pages always show today’s numbers.
You have seen Mercor listings quoting $80/hr, $150/hr, even $400/hr, and you want to know whether the platform behind them is real before you give up an evening to an application. We joined Mercor and went through its screening ourselves, and we track its public listings daily. Here is what we found, including the numbers on its 226 open roles. If you are still weighing up whether is Mercor legit enough to spend time on, the short answer is below.
TL;DR
- Yes, Mercor is legitimate. It is a real company that matches professionals with AI labs needing expert feedback on model output, and its official site is work.mercor.com.
- Applying is free. We were never asked to pay anything at any stage of the process.
- As of October 23, 2026, we list 226 open Mercor roles. 217 of them state an hourly rate, the median top rate is $80/hr, and the highest is $500/hr.
- 42 of the 226 are beginner friendly. The rest mostly want real domain depth in medicine, law, finance, science or engineering.
- 173 of the 226 say only "Remote," which does not mean worldwide. Check each listing for a named country before you apply.
Yes, Mercor is legit: it is a real company paying real hourly contracts to people with verifiable expertise. The main risk is mismatch, because most of its work wants specialist depth you either have or you do not, and an application costs you time either way.
Is Mercor legit? The verdict and our checks
Mercor matches professionals with AI labs that need expert feedback on model output. Most of its roles are hourly contracts for people with real domain depth: physicians, lawyers, PhDs, engineers, finance people. A lot of its listings are narrow and specific, which makes it easy to tell whether you fit.
Here are the checks we ran before listing its roles.
A real company on a real domain. Mercor's official site is work.mercor.com, and its listings and applications run through that domain. You can see what we found on our Mercor page covering jobs and screening. We joined and applied ourselves, and we say so on our page explaining how we vet platforms. We do not review individual listings; those come from each platform's public feed daily.
No fee to apply. We uploaded resumes, applied to listings and sat the screening steps. Nobody asked us for payment at any point. Anyone requesting money in Mercor's name to "process" an application is not Mercor.
A rate before you accept. Most listings state a range with a top rate, and you see it before you commit. Nine of the 226 do not state pay at all, and those say the rate is given during onboarding. You can also read how referral links work here; we earn a reward if someone we refer is hired, and it never changes which jobs we list or how we order them.
It is not the only platform we list. If you want to see how Mercor sits next to the others, we have platforms compared side by side.
What Mercor hires for right now
Right now, as of October 23, 2026, we list 226 open Mercor roles. Field tags on those listings break down like this:
| Field | Open Mercor listings |
|---|---|
| Science and engineering | 56 |
| Generalist | 45 |
| Voice and audio | 33 |
| Finance and business | 25 |
| Medicine and health | 25 |
| Software and data | 18 |
| Teaching and humanities | 7 |
| Law and compliance | 6 |
The narrow titles are the tell. These are a few of the roles open as we write:
- Agent Engineer at $100 to $500/hr.
- Oncologist at $350 to $450/hr.
- Clinical Survey Research and Methodology Expert (Physician or PhD) at $200/hr.
- [Long project] Anonymization Writer at $45 to $55/hr.
- Computer Power Users and Automation Builders (must own a MacBook) at $50 to $60/hr.
Science and engineering is the biggest bucket, and we track those roles separately on our list of science and engineering AI training jobs. If your background is broader, start with generalist AI training jobs. Language and audio work sits in its own category: voice and audio AI training jobs.
What it pays
Mercor pays hourly. Here are the live figures for its 226 listings, as of October 23, 2026:
| Mercor listings | Figure |
|---|---|
| State an hourly rate | 217 of 226 |
| Median top rate | $80/hr |
| 10th percentile top rate | $40/hr |
| 90th percentile top rate | $150/hr |
| Highest top rate | $500/hr |
| Do not state pay | 9 |
Most listings state only a top rate, so read "up to" literally. The $500/hr figure is the ceiling on one role, not what a typical project pays. Half the roles with a stated rate top out at $80/hr or less, and a tenth sit at $40/hr or below.
For a neutral reference point, the median top rate across all 1,687 listings on the site is $75/hr. That is a site-wide figure across every field, so treat it as context rather than a like-for-like comparison.
An hourly rate is not a promise of hours. Projects start and end, and a high ceiling on a listing does not mean steady weekly work.
Who can apply
Eligibility is the part people skip, and it matters more than the rate. Of the 226 Mercor listings, 53 name specific countries, none say worldwide, and 173 say only "Remote."
"Remote" alone does not mean you can work from anywhere. A listing is open to your country only if it names that country or says worldwide. If it says neither, the location is genuinely unstated, and you should not assume it is open to you.
The countries named most often across these listings:
| Country | Mercor listings naming it |
|---|---|
| United States | 16 |
| Germany | 7 |
| Spain | 7 |
| China | 6 |
| India | 5 |
| Canada | 4 |
| United Kingdom | 4 |
| Brazil, Australia, Mexico | 2 each |
| South Africa, Portugal | 1 each |
Languages come up often too, mainly for language and audio projects: Spanish appears on 12 listings, German on 10, Chinese on 6, French on 4 and Portuguese on 3. Smaller counts include Italian, Dutch, Korean, Malayalam, Gujarati, Telugu and Bengali at one listing each.
Tax, legal and visa questions depend on where you live, so check your local rules before you accept a contract.
How you get in
The process is shorter than most people expect, and it is specific by design.
- Upload your resume and apply to a specific listing. Mercor does not run a general pool application the way some platforms do. You pick a role.
- Complete a short AI-led video interview about your background. Most listings ask for this. It is a conversation about your experience, not a general personality screen.
- Some projects add a domain assessment before you are matched to work.
We do not have acceptance rates for Mercor and we will not guess at them. What we can tell you is where applications usually go wrong.
Apply to the listing that matches your background most closely, not to everything. A physician who applies to a finance role is wasting an attempt. Being accepted once makes the next match faster, so the first project is the one worth preparing for. Before the video interview, know your own resume cold, be ready to describe your specialty in plain terms, and pick a quiet room with a working camera and microphone.

Who it suits, who should skip it
Mercor suits people with a credential or a body of work behind them: physicians, lawyers, PhDs, engineers, finance professionals, and people fluent in a second language used by a live project. If you can name your specialty in one sentence and defend it for ten minutes, you are the profile this platform is built for.
Skip it if your background is broad and you want work quickly. Only 42 of the 226 listings are beginner friendly, meaning no degree or specialist experience required. Skip it too if you need guaranteed hours or a predictable monthly figure, because projects start and end. Skip it if you cannot do a video interview in a quiet room.
If you fall into the skip group and still want AI training work, look at micro1 jobs and screening, where the generalist evaluation roles are the most open entry point, or AfterQuery jobs and screening, where you should expect a screening task that looks like the real work. We also reviewed a similar program in our write-up on whether Handshake AI is legit.
