Job counts and pay in this guide come from the live listings on this site as of October 24, 2026. They change daily; the linked pages always show today’s numbers.
You have heard DataAnnotation is a reasonable place to start, and you want to know where else to sign up without spending an evening on a platform that is not hiring. We joined Mindrift, micro1 and Mercor ourselves and went through their screening, so this comparison covers what each one asks for and who it suits. Every count below comes from our listings as of October 24, 2026.
TL;DR
- micro1 has the most work of the three: 239 open listings right now, a median top rate of $100/hr, and 51 roles that need no degree or specialist experience.
- Mercor is the specialist option: 214 listings, a median top rate of $84/hr, 36 beginner-friendly roles, and listings narrow enough that you can tell quickly whether you fit.
- Mindrift is small and focused: 19 listings at a median top rate of $70/hr, all in medicine and science, with no beginner-friendly roles in what we list.
- Of the 472 listings this post covers, 336 say only "Remote" and name no country. Check eligibility before you spend time on an application.
- Start with micro1 if you are early career, Mercor if you hold specialist credentials, and both if you want the most chances at a match.
The short answer: micro1 is the best DataAnnotation alternative for most people starting out, Mercor is the stronger pick for specialists, and Mindrift suits writers and subject experts who prefer fewer, broader projects.

The medians come from different mixes of work, so read the table as a map of where the work sits rather than a pay ranking across fields. micro1's median leans on law, generalist and medicine listings. Mercor's leans on science, engineering and generalist work. Mindrift lists only medicine and science roles.
Across the 472 listings this post covers, 458 state an hourly rate and the median top rate is $88/hr. The 10th percentile sits at $40/hr and the 90th at $200/hr. 87 listings are beginner friendly. 108 name specific countries, 28 say worldwide, and 336 say only "Remote".
micro1: the widest entry point
micro1 (jobs.micro1.ai) posts the broadest range of the three. Our 239 live listings cover generalist evaluation (52), law and compliance (39), medicine and health (32), software and data (29), science and engineering (23), voice and audio (22), finance and business (20) and design and creative (7). 51 are marked beginner friendly, more than either of the other two. 28 listings say worldwide, 51 name specific countries and 160 say only "Remote".
Generalist evaluation work is the most open entry point, and it is where a recent graduate has the best shot. You can browse our generalist AI training jobs to see what that work looks like before you apply.
One listing shows the top end. The Investment Funds & Asset Management Attorney role lists $140 to $400/hr and does not state a location.
How screening works at micro1
Apply on the listing page, then complete the AI recruiter interview. It asks about your experience and, for technical roles, tests the skill itself. If you pass, you are matched to a project when one opens. Do the interview somewhere quiet, with a working camera and microphone. Our micro1 jobs and screening page adds what we saw after applying.
Mercor: narrow listings for deep specialists
Mercor (work.mercor.com) matches professionals with AI labs that need expert feedback on model output. Our 214 listings cover science and engineering (55), generalist (43), voice and audio (26), medicine and health (25), finance and business (25), software and data (18), law and compliance (6) and teaching and humanities (5). 36 are beginner friendly. 45 name specific countries, none say worldwide, and 169 say only "Remote".
Science and engineering is the biggest bucket there, and our science and engineering AI training jobs page shows the shape of that work. The listings themselves tend to be specific, which helps. The Oncologist role lists $350 to $450/hr. The Agent Engineer role lists $100 to $500/hr. Neither states a location, so confirm eligibility before you apply.
How screening works at Mercor
Upload your resume and apply to a specific listing. Most listings ask for a short AI-led video interview about your background, and some projects add a domain assessment before matching. Apply to the listing that matches your background most closely rather than to everything. Our guide to passing the Mercor AI interview covers preparation, and if you want a second opinion on the platform, read our review of whether Mercor is legit. Our Mercor jobs and screening page has the rest.
Mindrift: fewer projects, broader roles
Mindrift (mindrift.ai) is run by Toloka and hires freelance AI tutors to write and review training data. It posts fewer, broader roles than most platforms, often for writers, editors and subject experts. Our 19 listings split between medicine and health (11) and science and engineering (8). None are beginner friendly. 12 name specific countries, all of them the United States, none say worldwide, and 7 say only "Remote". The highest top rate in the set is $70/hr.
The medicine roles are the larger group, and our medicine and health AI training jobs page covers that field across platforms, so you can compare the same work elsewhere.
How screening works at Mindrift
Sign up, complete your profile, then pass the qualification tests for the projects you want. Every role goes through one sign-up link, and you pick your project inside. Preparation matters more than speed here. Our Mindrift qualification test guide explains the format, and our Mindrift jobs and screening page adds what we saw after applying. DataAnnotation, for context
We do not list DataAnnotation (dataannotation.tech). It runs a starter assessment before any paid work. We have no listing data for it, so we cannot give you open job counts or rates for the platform. What we can tell you is how the three above differ at the door: an AI recruiter interview at micro1, a video interview and sometimes a domain test at Mercor, and qualification tests at Mindrift.
Which one should you apply to?
Pick micro1 if you are early in your career, if you have a generalist background, or if you want the largest pool of listings to choose from and a screening step you can finish in one sitting. Its 51 beginner-friendly listings are the reason it wins that group.
Pick Mercor if you hold a real credential in medicine, law, finance, engineering or research, and you would rather apply to two or three listings that fit than to twenty that do not. Its listings are narrower, which makes the fit easier to judge before you spend an evening on a video interview.
Pick Mindrift if you are a writer, editor or subject expert who wants fewer, broader projects and is willing to clear qualification tests before any work appears. If you need a role that requires no degree or specialist experience, apply elsewhere first.
Apply to both micro1 and Mercor if your background sits between the two, for example a science PhD with some generalist teaching experience. The screening is different at each, and neither platform promises you work. Being accepted on one does not carry over to the other.
Whichever you choose, check the country line first. 108 of the 472 listings here name a specific country, 28 say worldwide, and 336 say only "Remote", which does not mean worldwide on its own.
