Job counts and pay in this guide come from the live listings on this site as of October 24, 2026. They change daily; the linked pages always show today’s numbers.
You have seen a Mindrift listing, probably a physician or engineering role, and you want to know if the platform behind it is real before you spend an evening on a qualification test. Fair question. We joined Mindrift and went through its screening ourselves, and we track its public listings daily.
TL;DR
- Mindrift is legit. It is run by Toloka, a company that has paid people for data work for years.
- All 19 Mindrift listings we had open as of October 24, 2026 state an hourly rate, with a median top rate of $70/hr.
- The work is narrow: 11 of the 19 are medicine and health roles, 8 are science and engineering, and none are marked beginner-friendly.
- 12 of the 19 name specific countries, and the United States appears in all 12. None of the 19 says worldwide.
- You get in through one sign-up, then the qualification tests for the project you pick. The tests decide whether you work, not the sign-up.
Is Mindrift legit?
Yes. Mindrift is a legitimate AI training platform, run by Toloka, with its official site at mindrift.ai. It hires freelance AI tutors to write and review training data for AI models, and it posts fewer, broader roles than most platforms, often for writers, editors and subject experts.
Four checks do most of the work when you are sizing up any platform. Here is how Mindrift holds up on each.
A real company is behind it
Mindrift is a Toloka product. Toloka has been in the data and AI training business for years, which means there is an established company standing behind the contracts, not a site that appeared last month. We do not list platforms without confirming who runs them, and you can read more about how we vet platforms.
Applying costs you nothing
No legitimate AI training platform charges you to apply, take a test or hold an account. We were not asked for payment at any point in our own sign-up or screening. If any platform ever asks you to pay for "priority" or "verification", treat that as a reason to walk away.
The rate is on the listing before you commit
This is the check people skip. Across all 1,669 open AI training jobs on our site right now, 228 do not state pay at all and give the rate during onboarding. None of Mindrift's 19 listings is in that group. Every one of them states an hourly rate up front, so you know the ceiling before you start a test.
The domain is the official one
Mindrift's official site is mindrift.ai. Anything else using the name, especially a domain that asks for your ID documents or a payment, is not the platform we vetted.
Tax and visa questions depend on where you live, so check locally.
What Mindrift hires for right now
Mindrift has 19 open listings as of October 24, 2026. That is a small slice of the site, and the shape of it is unusual: the roles cluster hard into two fields.
| Field | Open Mindrift listings |
|---|---|
| Medicine & health | 11 |
| Science & engineering | 8 |
The medical side is physicians reviewing clinical material. Examples include a part-time hospitalist and internist role for medical AI evaluation, a physician role reviewing clinical cases, and an internal medicine case review role. There is also a freelance physician AI trainer listing that does not name a country.
The engineering side is simulation and design work for people with real tooling experience, such as a freelance CFD engineer role and a freelance CAD and simulation role. You can browse the wider pools on our medicine and health and science and engineering pages.
What it pays
The 19 Mindrift listings look like this:
| Mindrift listings, as of October 24, 2026 | Figure |
|---|---|
| Open listings | 19 |
| State an hourly rate | 19 |
| Median top rate | $70/hr |
| 10th percentile top rate | $63/hr |
| 90th percentile top rate | $70/hr |
| Highest top rate | $70/hr |
| Beginner-friendly | 0 |
| Name specific countries | 12 |
| Say worldwide | 0 |
| Say only "Remote" | 7 |
Read those as top rates. Most listings state a ceiling, so "$70/hr" means up to $70/hr for the work on that project, not a guaranteed weekly figure. Within Mindrift the spread is real: the medical listings sit at up to $70/hr, while the CFD engineer listing is up to $39/hr and the CAD engineer listing is up to $37/hr. Pay depends on the project you are matched to and the depth it asks for, so do not assume every Mindrift project pays the same.
For context, across the 1,405 hourly listings on the site right now, the median top rate is $75/hr. That figure covers many fields and platforms, so treat it as background, not a benchmark for your own case.
Who can apply
Eligibility is where people waste time. Of the 19 Mindrift listings, 12 name specific countries and 7 say only "Remote". None says worldwide.
"Remote" on a listing does not mean you can work from anywhere. It often means the platform has not published the country list yet, or the role is open in places it has not named. If a listing names only the United States, and the country appears in all 12 of the ones that name anything, assume you need to be there and able to prove it.
On experience, the answer is blunt: 0 of the 19 listings are marked beginner-friendly. Every one expects either a medical credential or engineering depth. If you are looking for a first AI training role with no specialist background, this is the wrong platform, and our full list of open AI training jobs has 365 beginner-friendly roles you can search instead.
How you get in
We went through Mindrift's screening ourselves, so here is the process as we experienced it, with no details beyond what we can stand behind.
- Sign up and complete your profile.
- Land in your account, where you pick the project you want.
- Pass the qualification tests for that project.
Every role goes through one sign-up link, and project selection happens inside the account rather than through a separate application per listing. That is different from platforms that want a fresh application each time.
Test content and length vary by project, and we do not describe specific questions, because yours will not match ours. Preparation advice that does hold: read the project brief in full before you start, answer in your own words with your real credentials, and do not rush a timed section to get it over with. Our guide to passing Mindrift's qualification tests covers how writers, editors and subject experts should prepare.
Who it suits, who should skip it
Mindrift suits licensed physicians and clinicians who want part-time review work on their own schedule, and engineers with hands-on CFD or CAD experience who can explain their reasoning in writing. It also suits people who prefer one account and a few well-defined projects over juggling a dozen applications.
Skip it if you are early career or looking for a generalist writing role. Skip it if you are outside the countries named on the listing you want, since applying from elsewhere wastes your time. Skip it if you need guaranteed hours or a predictable monthly figure, because freelance project work does not provide that.
If you want a wider field, Mercor runs a similar expert model with more listings, and we reviewed whether Mercor is legit after applying there too. Anyone AI posts roles by country, so the same job often appears once per market. If you are weighing several options at once, our platforms compared side by side page is the fastest way to see the differences, and it includes smaller programs like Handshake AI and alternatives to Outlier. We vetted each of them by joining and applying, the same way we did with Mindrift.
Where to go from here
Start with our Mindrift jobs and screening page for the current listing set and what we know about the platform. If you hold a medical or engineering credential, filter our science and engineering roles or the medicine and health listings and check the country on each one before you apply.
