Job counts and pay in this guide come from the live listings on this site as of October 24, 2026. They change daily; the linked pages always show today’s numbers.

You have seen Braintrust listings and you want to know whether the company is real and whether the work pays what it says. Fair question, and one we can answer from our own application rather than from a sales page. We joined Braintrust, applied, and we track its public listings daily.

  • 65 of those 96 state an hourly rate. The median top rate is $29/hr and the highest is $150/hr.

Braintrust is legit for AI training work: it is an established marketplace, it does not charge you to apply, and most of its listings show a rate before you accept a project. Here is how we checked, and what the listings show right now.

Is Braintrust legit? The checks we ran

We apply to every platform we list, and our process for vetting platforms is the same each time. Four things stood out.

It is a real company with named clients

Braintrust is a freelance talent marketplace. We list only its AI training work, which it staffs for clients including SuperAnnotate, Outlier, Turing, DATAmundi, Toloka, iMerit and an unnamed leading AI lab. The client is named on each job, so you can see who the work is actually for before you apply.

You do not pay to apply

We created a profile and applied without paying anything. You apply through Braintrust, not the client, even when that client also hires directly. That matters if you spot the same project on another site.

You can usually see the rate first

65 of the 96 listings state an hourly rate on the listing itself. The other 31 say the rate is given during onboarding, so you may not see a number until later in the process. If pay is the deciding factor for you, start with the ones that show a figure.

The domain is app.usebraintrust.com

That is the official site, and it is where the profile and applications live. Details on the platform are on our Braintrust jobs and screening page.

What Braintrust hires for right now

Languages is the biggest group by a wide margin, and it is not close. As of October 24, 2026, the 96 open Braintrust listings break down like this.

Field Open listings
Languages 43
Generalist 13
Voice & audio 11
Software & data 9
Science & engineering 7
Finance & business 5
Medicine & health 4
Law & compliance 3
Total 96

Language roles name French (5), German (4) and Spanish (4) most often, then Chinese, Italian, Vietnamese, Korean, Hebrew, Japanese, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada at 2 each. Indian languages are a real part of the mix here. You can browse languages AI training jobs, generalist AI training jobs and voice and audio AI training jobs across all platforms to compare.

A sample of what is open shows how wide the range is.

Role Pay Countries
PhD in Quantitative Finance, AI Research Evaluator $50-$150/hr US, UK, Canada, Australia
STEM PhD Expert for AI Reasoning and Evaluation $50-$150/hr US, UK, Canada, Australia
Dermatologist, AI Training $145/hr US
Senior U.S. Attorney and Legal Expert $105/hr US
FEA Engineer, CalculiX $40-$90/hr US, UK, Canada, France
Mobile AI Rater, Android $19/hr US

Business analyst, quality analyst and other generalist evaluation roles sit closer to $23/hr. Expert work in law, medicine and engineering carries the top of the range.

What it pays

Across the 65 Braintrust listings that state an hourly rate, the median top rate is $29/hr as of October 24, 2026. The 10th percentile is $15/hr, the 90th percentile is $100/hr, and the highest is $150/hr.

Most listings state only a top rate. Treat every figure as "up to", including the $50-$150/hr bands above. The top of the band is what the listing advertises, not what every accepted person receives.

31 of the 96 listings state no pay at all, and the rate is given during onboarding. That is not a red flag on its own, but it does mean you may spend time on an application before you learn the number. Ask early if the figure decides it for you.

Data collection roles pay a fixed fee per project, not an hourly rate. We never convert that kind of fee into an hourly figure, because the two are not comparable. A per-project fee tells you what the project pays, not what an hour of your time is worth.

Rates also vary with the project, your location and the assessment you pass. We do not rank platforms by median alone, and our platforms compared side by side page explains why.

Who can apply

95 of the 96 listings name at least one country. None say worldwide, and one only says "Remote", which on its own tells you nothing about where you can live. Remote alone does not mean worldwide.

The countries named most often are the United States (38 listings), Canada (24), India (23), the United Kingdom (20), Germany (13), France (12), Australia (12), the Netherlands (11), Belgium (11), Denmark (11), Spain (10) and Italy (10). Listings can name several countries, so those counts overlap.

If your country does not appear on a listing, treat that listing as closed to you. Do not apply hoping the location rule is flexible. Check where you stand on tax and visa questions locally, since that depends on where you live.

How you get in

The basics

Create a profile on app.usebraintrust.com and apply to the job. That is the whole first stage. Braintrust then matches the client with applicants.

What clients add on top

Some clients run their own selection on top of the application. In our experience that can include an AI interview, a domain task and a recruiter interview. Which of these applies depends on the client and the project, so there is no single funnel to prepare for.

Preparing without guessing

We cannot tell you what the questions are. Prepare by being able to describe your background in plain terms: what you have done, what you are qualified in, and which language you work in natively. For a specialist role, expect to show the skill itself rather than talk about it. For a language role, be ready to work in that language throughout, not just on the application.

Rates and available work can vary with your assessment, location and what the project needs. Nobody at any platform can promise you tasks after you pass.

Who it suits, who should skip it

It suits language specialists first. If you work in French, German, Spanish or an Indian language and can review other people's output, this is the strongest part of the Braintrust board right now.

It also suits subject experts. Medicine, law, finance and engineering roles carry the highest rates we see on this platform, at $105/hr to $145/hr in the examples above.

Beginners have a route in. 63 of the 96 listings need no degree or specialist experience, mostly in generalist evaluation and language work. If you are starting out, those are the ones to target.

Skip it if you need worldwide remote work. Zero of the 96 listings say worldwide, and 95 name specific countries. A listing marked Remote without a country is not an invitation to apply from anywhere.

Skip it if you want a rate shown on every listing. 31 of the 96 do not show one, and you may only learn the figure during onboarding.

Skip it if you want one application and done. Client-run screening sits on top of the platform application, and you cannot control which client asks for what.

If Braintrust's mix does not fit, look at SME Careers jobs and screening for expert and language work with countries listed on almost every role, or micro1 jobs and screening for generalist evaluation roles that welcome recent graduates. Our reviews of Mercor, Handshake AI and Mindrift cover three more platforms we applied to, and platforms like Outlier covers the wider field.

Where to go from here

Start with our Braintrust jobs and screening page for the platform details, then browse every open AI training job we list and filter to the fields that match your background. If you are still weighing options, the platform pages will tell you which ones name countries and which ones leave location vague.
